From November 20 to December 12, 2015, the Palais Garnier opera house opens its doors for two of the most important operas in the twentieth century, Bluebeard’s Castle and The Human Voice.
Bluebeard’s Castle:
Performed for the first time on May 24, 1918, in Budapest, Bluebeard’s Castle proved tremendous success. It was written in Hungarian by the aesthete poet Béla Balázs, and composed, in 1911, by the famous composer Béla Bartók. The libretto is based on a popular French folktale, “La Barbe Bleue”, a tale about a French Duke, known as Bluebeard, who lives in a scary dark castle, and the girl that he loves, Judith, who ended as a victim of her curiosity. The show brings together the great German baritone Johannes Martin Kränzle in the role of Duke Bluebeard and the charming Russian mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova as Judith.
The Human Voice:
Based on Jean Cocteau’s play “La Voix Humaine”, and composed in 1958 by the French composer Francis Poulenc, The Human Voice’s success has never been less than Bluebeard’s Castle’s. It was first performed on February 6, 1959, at the Théâtre National de l’Opéra-Comique, in Paris, and has been performed after that in many other countries such as UK and the US. The libretto is about Elle, a desperate woman, who calls her lover for the last time before committing suicide because of his betrayal. You will inevitably enjoy listening to this new edition with the Canadian soprano Barbara Hannigan singing the role of Elle!
The work is a cooperation between the Finnish conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Polish director, Krzysztof Warlikowski. It is supertitled in both English and French languages and lasts approximately 135 minutes.
People from all over the world will attend the show to enjoy this wonderful piece of art. So, if you are staying at Hotel Louvre Marsollier Opera, this is one of the shows that you should not miss in Paris this period!
