The region of Oceania is one that doesn’t always get the attention that it deserves from art galleries and museums. There are regions of the world that come to mind more quickly when we think of foreign cultures or artistic hubs. We might be drawn to Japanese art or other South East Asian cultures. We may have some idea of the traditions of Australia and New Zealand. However, Oceania as a wider region is ignored.
This current exhibition at the Musee du Quai Branly brings together around 200 items from a variety of nations and cultures across the Pacific Islands – from native cultures in New Zealand to the islands of Fiji, Papua New Guinea and more. There is a chance to not only see these cultures and compare their artistic traits but to also see how these traditions fit within our modern, Western world.
The show continues at the museum until the 7th of July. Don’t miss out!
