The talismans may be a foreign idea to many French viewers, but the ideas and symbols are not. That is why the new show at the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris is so interesting.
In the 18th century, Colbert ordered a series of works for King Louis XIV that would showcase the magnificence of his reign. This included a series of etchings that showcased Paris at the time. The plates used have become important artefacts in Parisian art culture and this collection is now part of a larger exhibition in the Pyramide – Cour Napoléon at the Louvre for their Spring series.
