Before the nineteenth century, much of Europe was totally oblivious of the Oriental world. These far-off places only seemed like wastelands in the imagination of most Europeans. It was only after the celebrated painter Eugene Delacroix traveled to North Africa in 1832 that the Western world would be introduced to the Oriental world and the various cultures of the natives of these mystical lands.

This retrospective exhibition hopes to shed light on the creative inroads between Margiela’s designs when he was creative director of Hermes and simultaneously the director of his own Maison Margiela label. Interestingly, the exhibition will be directed by Margiela himself.
