It seems like a long time ago now that any of us were able to head out to the theatre and see a show. Theatres, opera houses and other forms of entertainment will one day continue to provide the great cultural entertainment we are used to. Parisians will be able to enjoy nights out on the town and tourists will flock to see shows. But, we are not quite there yet. On May 11th, the restrictions imposed across France started to ease and locals started to gain some freedom back. But, theatres holding large audiences will have to wait to open their doors.
The good news is that you can still enjoy some online entertainment from the Paris Opera while you wait. The company started an online programme early on during this Coronavirus pandemic to provide entertainment to people in their own homes. There were some fears that this might end when the rules on confinement changed. But, the company has since extended its list of dates. There are now shows online up until the end of May. At the time of writing, they are in the middle of a run of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. From there, viewers can enjoy Don Pasquale, a documentary called L’Opera by Jean-Stéphane Bron and then Bordi Godounov. There is also a bonus show programme with performances available right across the year.
The plan for these additional free access shows is the same. Viewers can tune in via the Opera’s own website or through Culturebox at 7:30 pm. The shows will air at the same time each night for six days before switching to the next title. Therefore, there a lot of opportunities to see one of your favourites.
This scheme has been in place since the middle of March and remains an ideal way to enjoy the Opera while staying home and staying safe.
