Popular for being home to some of the world’s most important pieces of art, from April 5th until August, 21st, 2017, the Musée de l’Orangerie displays a large exhibition that covers a huge selection of Impressionist pieces as well as Western and Japanese works of Modern Art.

Dedicated to some of the finest works of the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer, the exhibition, which aims at examining these works in juxtaposition to other Dutch painters of the Golden Age, highlights work by famous artists like Gerrit Dou, Gerard ter Borch, Gabriel Metsu, Caspar Netscher, Jan Steen, Pieter de Hooch, and Frans van Mieris.
The collection which contains some 200 artworks dating back to the 18th century, consists of French paintings, sculptures, and mainly drawings. Considered one of the most important private collections of French drawings, it assembles valuable works by Watteau, Boucher, Fragonard, Greuze and David.
The opera which is originated from The Splendors and Miseries of Courtesans from Honoré de Balzac’s series of novels The Human Comedy, has not only its music but also its libretto written by Francesconi
