Until February 15, 2016, the Gallery 2 of the Centre Pompidou is host to Wifredo Lam, an exhibition illustrating the development of the work of the Cuban painter Wifredo Lam from 1923 to 1982.
Wifredo Lam was born on December 8, 1902, in Sagua La Grande, Cuba, to a Cantonese father and a mother of mixed-race ancestry. His keen interest in culture, most notably traditional Afro-Cuban, can clearly be seen in almost all of his work.
This retrospective exhibition covers a period of around six decades of the artist’s life: Spain (1923-1938), Paris-Marseille (1938-1941), Cuba and the Americas (1941-1952), Paris, Caracas, Havana, Albissola, and Zurich (1952-1961), Paris and Albissola (1962-1982).
Featuring more than 400 works including paintings, drawings, old photographs, engravings, ceramics, reviews and very rare books, Wifredo Lam has been attracting a large number of visitors since it was launched on September 30, 2015.
Lam’s Chef-d’oeuvre, The Jungle (1943) is also on view along with Lumiere de la Fôret (1942), and Autel pour Yemaya (1944). These three masterpieces are on loan for the first time from the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
Wifredo Lam is curated by Catherine David.
